Building and maintaining fan relationships on Facebook

Facebook controls the indie music industry with their Likes system. If you don’t have Likes, you’re nobody. Getting to an arbitrary number of Likes is more important than you might think, so better put down those instruments, postpone your rehearsal and pay attention.

The more time you spend getting Likes, the more Likes you’ll get. That’s a scientific fact (source: Wikipedia). Spend as much time as possible staring at the computer screen so your voice can be heard by people who spend lots of time staring at the computer screen. These are your potential Likes (aka “fans”) just hanging out in cyberspace, waiting for you to reach them. If your strategies are effective, they will start to Like, Comment and Share all of your posts about likes, comments and shares, getting other people who like, comment and share things to like, comment and share YOUR things.

There is a whole wide world out there of people who sit on the computer all day with Facebook open in at least one tab, and it’s up to you to reach them. How you get there is your choice and yours alone, nobody can tell you exactly how to do it because methods vary from individual to individual. Find a strategy that is in line with your overall lifestyle and run with it.

These people who religiously like, comment and share things might not buy your merch, or attend your shows, or remember your band name as soon as they shut off their computer, but as far as the internet is concerned they are your most important asset. Maintaining relationships with them is important but can eat up a lot of time, and can also be tedious since fans all tend to say the same things over and over \m/.

Because of this, it’s a good idea to keep a text file of canned responses so you can copy/paste and trick fans in to thinking they are having an original conversation with you. 9 times out of 10 they won’t notice, but if you get busted you can just ask them to like, comment or share something else and their attention will be focused elsewhere while you make your escape.

Working up the motivation to leave your house and hit the streets to build your brand is hard. That’s why in today’s society, no matter where you are it is perfectly acceptable to refresh Facebook every 2 minutes so you can keep up with important news, updates and events. There are 7 billion people in the world. 1 out of every 13 people on the planet have a Facebook page, and roughly 85% of those people do nothing else but check Facebook. While it may sound like a vast time suck staring into the abyss, this is your potential audience, and nobody but you is going to reach them.
